Presents

On the 12th May 2007 @ the College Chapel Steps
Beat fusion
By Aisha Edris
A band with 29 years
of history S.Thomas’ Hewisi band organised their annual musical extravaganza
“Beat Fusion” on May 12. The concert was organised solely by the members of the
band, which has not changed since the concert began. Around 30 members coloured
the event.
“Beat Fusion” - a mixture of eastern and western music - “this year our theme
was to mix both western and eastern music, it was a great success. All these
years we have revolutionised our concerts so that the audiences would benefit”
Ravith Goonewardene, the Band leader of 2006 and the student advisor for the
band said.
The Hewisi Band of S. Thomas’ college had won the 3rd place for the All Island
Eastern band competition held by D.S. Senanayake College. “we are not a cadet
band, we’re more like a Kandyan band which means we do not have strict rules
such as punishing the members” said Shanel
The most distinct feature about the STC band is that they play music with a fast
beat which has given is a novel idea. The Hewisi band consists of Geta Bera, Yak
Bera, Davul, Thammettum, flute, Thalampota.
Even without proper training, the members of the band had become a huge success.
Though they are an eastern band, most of the members have a knowledge of western
music, which has enriched the band, to also be able to play western music.

and Methodist College.
The boys thanked their Warden, Dr. D.A Ponniah, their master in charge, Mr.
Sarath Wijewardena and their parents for the patience that they had during the
event.
“We only had one month to practice for the event. So we had to practice till
9.30 in the night. Somehow we made it a success with the limited time.”
Dharshana Jayasekara, the leader of the Hewisi band said.
Some members of the team of organisors were, Dilanka Mathew, the project
coordinator, the two project chairpersons were, Dharshana Jayasekara and Ravith
Goonewardene and the Treasurer was Shanel Fonseka. With the team effort the boys
were able to make the grand concert a huge success.
The most unique feature of the event was the “Bera Waliya” a programme which
featured drums and was joined by the flutes. At the end of the concert the band
had a joint musical session, with the guitarists and also had few “Papara”
sessions.
“We had a large audience which really made the concert a success. After the
concert was over we were thrown into the pool, it was really fun” grinned Ravith.
